Vale Reevaluates Copper And Nickel Production Guidance.

Brazilian miner Vale SA (Vale) said on Monday it was reassessing its 2021 nickel and copper production guidance after strikes and heavy rains in Canada severely disrupted production.

In its second-quarter output report, Vale said it produced 41,500 tonnes of nickel and 73,500 tonnes of copper, down 14.3% and 4% quarter-on-quarter, respectively.

Vale said a union strike at its Sudbury mine in Canada was affecting output of both metals. In addition, irregular maintenance at a metals refinery in Wales limited nickel production, while copper production was hit by flooding at Voisey's Bay in Labrador, Canada.

Vale said production of iron ore, its core business, reached 75.7 million tonnes in the second quarter, up 11.3% from the previous quarter and 12% from a year earlier. The company kept its 2021 iron ore production guidance unchanged at 315 million to 335 million tonnes.
