What is Conveyor Machine
A conveyor is a machine that evenly conveys bulk or piece-packed goods along a certain line from the loading point to the unloading point in a continuous manner. Compared with the lifting machinery, the conveyed goods are conveyed non-stop along a certain line when it works; the loading and unloading of the working components are carried out in the process of movement, without stopping and with less starting braking; the bulk goods to be conveyed are distributed on the bearing components in a continuous form, and the conveyed component goods are also moved in a continuous manner in a certain order.
Advantages of Conveyor Machine
Time savings
Materials can be moved from location to location or from one level to another rapidly and easily.
Continuous operation
Materials are continuously loaded and unloaded for long periods of time without interruption or stoppage.
Automated unloading
Conveyors can be designed to automatically unload materials without the need for manual labor.
Control of movement
Conveying systems have speed controls to monitor how rapidly items move along the system, which eliminates the concern for handling issues or breakage.
Directional
Though older conveying systems were able to move in only one direction, modern conveyors, with CNC controls, can move in forward or back. This helps in adjusting manufacturing operations.
Low maintenance
The majority of conveyors require little maintenance, though there are some varieties with motors and parts that need to be continually checked and replaced. The need for maintenance depends on the conveyor's use and environment.
Safety
Conveyors are the safest method for moving materials through a facility or production floor. They have built in on and off switches, emergency stop switches, and speed adjustments. The image below is of a safety cable stop for conveyors.
High volume
Conveyors are a part of an automated system capable of moving hundreds or thousands of tons of material per hour or in a day.
What Is A Conveyor Machine And How Does It Work?
A conveyor is a mechanical device used in many industries to move goods or products from one location to another. These systems are extremely helpful for businesses dealing with heavy and dangerous items, raw materials, or delicate products. From huge chemical drums to tiny pharmaceutical vials, conveyors are integral to modern manufacturing and production lines.
While there are many types of conveyors, most use electric motors or engines to power the belts, rollers, or slats that carry the product. Most of us are familiar with conveyors that provide a flat surface to transport goods, but some conveyor systems can even be overhead or use side belts to move the product.
The Benefits Of Using A Conveyor In Your Manufacturing Process
Conveyors bring a number of benefits to a manufacturing and production plant. Firstly, and most importantly, is that these systems are more efficient than manual handling. They increase efficiency and productivity, especially for large plants or facilities where goods are moved across multiple levels.
Not only do they lower labour costs but also, just as importantly, they promote safety. Conveyors reduce the chance of workers suffering strain injuries or accidents from carrying heavy, fragile, and dangerous products.
Another advantage is that conveyor systems have a small footprint, which means a company will not have to upgrade to bigger premises. This is especially useful for companies where production demands change because you can simply speed up the conveyors to match production.
When used with accumulation and unscrambling tables, conveyors are particularly useful for automatic liquid filling processes, where they feed containers consistently into filling machines and collect them for packing.
Conveyor Machine Type

Belt Conveyor
Sometime our customers call these “Conveyor belts”. This is actually the belting material. A belt system is one of the simplest conveyor types. It moves parts from one end to the other. Speed can be variable with a variable speed drive. Don’t use belt systems as a working surface. They also can’t be used to present parts to a robot, or buffer or sequence parts. But their simplicity makes them one of the most common conveyor types available.
Gravity Roller Conveyor
Also one of the simplest types, they are very affordable. A series of rollers mounted on a side frame provides the rolling surface. When mounted on a decline angle, parts move by themselves. However if using gravity conveyors for parts of different size and weight it can be more difficult. you will need to control the speed and angle. Parts running into each other may cause damage. But compared with carrying parts from point A to point B, a gravity roller table is often a great starting point. It is a very simple productivity improvement.
Chain Conveyors
Floor mounted chain conveyors are great for heavy items. They are especially useful for items that have an uneven lower surface. The conveyor chain provide two or three contact points on the bottom of the load. As the chain moves it carries the product forward. They’re used to carry pallets and large industrial containers. If necessary, products are mounted on a fixture, or “skid” and the fixture is carried along the chains. This is a common application in auto plants. They are heavy duty, and generally move at slow speeds.
Live Roller Conveyor / Chain Driven Live Roller (CDLR)
If we combine the rollers from a gravity conveyor with the chains of a chain driven system, we can link the rollers. Add a motor and gearbox and now we have a live roller conveyor or chain driven live roller system. Sometimes people in the industry use the acronym CDLR. They are members of the floor conveyor family, and they are heavy duty material handling systems. Use them to transport pallets, seats (on skids or pallets), tires and containers. If fitted with loose plastic sleeves over the rollers as shown in the photo below, they can accumulate or buffer product. The rollers can keep moving even though the product on top is not moving. Chains are linked together from one roller to the next on the side.
Motorized roller conveyors – 24V MDR Conveyors
What if we put the motor inside the rollers? These modern motors are at the heart of today’s sophisticated distribution centers. With high speeds of 200 feet per minute or more, your Amazon and mail packages delivered to your home passed along miles of these type of conveyors. They use one or more motor driven roller per zone to create a series of zones along the conveyor.
Slat Conveyors
A slat conveyor is simply a two-strand chain system with slats connected to the chain and a guiding system for the slats. This creates a smooth surface to which tooling details or fixtures are mounted. Use this to hold parts in the desired position. Sometimes the fixtures can also allow the part to rotate 90 degrees or 180 degrees as required in several planes. Therefore you can use slat conveyors as a working surface for assembly operations. Positioning of the part is also quite precise. So it’s common for robots to perform the loading or unloading operation at one or more ends of a slat conveyor.
Overhead hand push beam trolley systems
Moving on to the overhead family of conveyor types, the simplest systems are hand pushed beam trolley systems. We use enclosed track or I-beam section as a track. These types are extremely versatile, easy to set up and affordable. They are mounted above the workplace with roof-supported or floor supported steel structures. For more information on the nine different types of overhead style systems, see this graphic. Trolleys for these systems are under $50 each and the tracks are also very affordable. Learn more about them here or buy them online here. Beam trolley systems are especially popular for painting and finishing operations. The mechanism remains above the part and is not covered by the spray.
Motorized overhead conveyor / Monorails
One of the most common types is an overhead conveyor with the trolleys connected together with a chain. The chain can either be enclosed (“enclosed track”) or open below an I-beam. These style of material handling systems are installed in nearly every high volume production facility. The chain is driven by a motor with a gearbox, and the parts to be moved are suspended from trolleys attached to the chain. Many different attachment types are available. For complex parts, use a fixture or carrier suspended from several trolleys to locate the part in position. The chain can be always running, or alternatively the system can index. This moves parts from one assembly station to the next at a predetermined interval.
Power and Free Conveyors
Also in the overhead family of devices is the power and free conveyor. It’s like a regular motorized overhead system, except it has two tracks. In one track, the chain is continuously running. In the other track, the trolleys move along with the chain using pusher mechanisms (known as “pusher dogs”). They’re mounted at regular intervals on the chain. When two trolleys are pressing against each other, the dogs can slide over the top. Likewise, a stop blade can be used with a pneumatic cylinder to replicate this geometry. This allow trolleys to start or stop movement virtually anywhere in the system. This versatility makes power and free conveyors the most productive style of overhead systems. They can start, stop, buffer and re-sequence parts with switches.

Higher movement speed and stable speed can be used.
Higher productivity.
Under the same productivity, the weight is light, the size is small, the cost is low, and the driving power is small.
Lower load on the parts of the transmission machinery and less impact.
Compact structure, easy manufacturing and maintenance.
Conveying goods line fixed action single, easy to realize automatic control.
The load is uniform during the working process, and the power consumed is almost constant.
It can only be conveyed according to a certain route, and each model can only be used for a certain type of goods, and it is generally not suitable for transporting single items of great weight, and its versatility is poor.
Most of the continuous conveyors cannot pick up the goods by themselves, and thus need to use certain feeding equipment.
How Do the Electrical Controls for Conveyors Work?
Just as there is a diverse range of conveyors that are used for any application, so are the electrical control systems. The simplest systems don’t require electrical control. These types include gravity roller and hand push overhead style beam trolley or enclosed track systems. Motorized systems can use simple start-stop switches for simple applications. However it’s more typical to have a control system that is uses input from sensors. Sensor types include photo eyes, limit switches or proximity sensors. These sensors can tell a processor when to stop, start or perform another function.
More advanced controls
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are for larger systems. They can control conveyors and also any other process equipment. These systems are often also fitted with a variable frequency drive (VFD) to adjust the speed of AC motors. And finally, the DC electric motors in 24V systems have their own specialized motor controllers. This enable inputs from sensors, processing of outputs and network connectivity via ethernet.
Maintenance of Conveyor Machine
In the long-term use of conveyors, faults or damage are inevitable. Therefore, the maintenance and upkeep of conveyors are essential. Specifically, the following points should be noted:
Regularly clean the various parts of the conveyor, including the conveyor belt, driving device, supporting rollers, drums, etc., to ensure that their surfaces are clean.
Regularly inspect the various components of the conveyor, especially the wear of the conveyor belt, supporting rollers, and drums, to ensure that they are in good working condition.
Check the tightness of the conveyor belt and adjust it to the appropriate tightness to avoid slipping or excessive wear.
Regularly lubricate the various moving parts of the conveyor to reduce friction and extend the service life of the equipment.
Conveyors are made up of many smaller mechanical components. Any failure from these pieces can cause bigger issues for the whole system. Complications can range anywhere from unnecessary noises or decreased performance, to complete and total stoppage. The following list shows some common problems with conveyor belts that you need to look out for.
• Belt Mistracking
By design, belts align with a track to keep the system true to its designated path. Mistracking occurs when the belt favors one side over another, resulting in an imbalance in force distribution across the belt. This leads to a bunch of other problems such as uneven belt wear, rubbing on surroundings, and materials falling off the belt. Apart from productivity and maintenance issues, mistracking also poses safety risks. In fact, industry standards, like those upheld by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), recognize mistracking as a safety violation.
• Material Spillage
The main purpose of conveyors is to transport materials. Any form of spillage is falling short of that purpose. This is usually an issue with industries that require the movement of materials in high volumes, such as mining conveyors. For such applications, material spillage can translate to product wastage.
• Material Carryback
Losing materials and products during their course is bad enough. What’s even worse is if these materials start a chain reaction by hindering the movement of the conveyor. When left to accumulate over time, particles can build up on the conveyor’s frame and eventually hinder its rotating components. These can potentially cause blockages, especially when dealing with high moisture, viscous products, and other bulk materials.
• Belt Slippage
Instances of slippage are normal, especially for the first few months of usage. In these earlier stages of operation, expect belts to stretch and give way to the load. However, over time, recurring belt slipping needs to be addressed. What could start as slipping can lead to more serious problems such as mistracking and belt damage.
How Are Problems With Conveyor Machine Prevented?
Preventing the main problems with conveyors starts with knowing what you’re dealing with. Being aware of the common causes and precursors to failure gives you a better sense of what to look for. Here are a few high-level steps you could do to avoid setbacks.
Conveyor Machine typically operate continuously over long periods. This highlights its vital role in the production process, where reliability is essential. A proactive maintenance strategy, such as preventive maintenance, is a natural fit with the way conveyors work. By performing proactive inspections and servicing, the main problems with conveyors can be corrected early, if not avoided altogether.
• Avoid misuse of conveyors
Conveyors are designed to perform under specific conditions and limitations. Misusing Conveyor Machine not only reduces the life of equipment but also poses a safety hazard. For example, carrying loads heavier than the design parameters can add stress and strain to various areas of the system. Key components such as motors and chains can be overworked, which then leads to additional wear and eventually breakdowns.
• Regularly clean your system
Debris can cause your belt to misalign and lead to mistracking. By performing regular cleaning activities, you can prevent the buildup of blockages that can cause more serious problems. This activity can be more challenging for outdoor applications such as mining and raw material transport. In such cases, visual inspections can help to identify major buildups that require urgent attention.
• Keep Critical Spare Parts on Hand
While the ultimate goal is to prevent breakdowns, it’s best to prepare for all possible contingencies. Conveyor Machine can be highly specialized pieces of equipment. Because they can serve very specific purposes, it follows that spare parts and components are also specially made. Ideally, these critical spares need to be available on-hand to significantly reduce the time it takes to repair conveyor machine.
• Listen to your staff
Workers who get to interact with the conveyors hold valuable information about the equipment. If any issues are starting to crop up, your staff will be the first ones to notice.
• Implement a comprehensive maintenance plan
With such a crucial role in production, conveyors need to be the most reliable pieces of equipment in a plant. The only conceivable way to achieve high uptime levels is to implement a comprehensive maintenance plan. Maintenance strategies should include both scheduled activity as well as backup plans for any immediate requirements.
Pulleys
Conveyor belt systems have at least two pulleys to control belt movement, a drive pulley and tail or return pulley. In between them are idler or dummy pulleys that are moved by the belt. The drive pulley pushes or pulls the load, while the tail pulley returns the belt. As can be seen in the diagram, idler pulleys serve a variety of functions in guiding the belt, which include controlling its tension.
Drive
The drive for the belt can be located in various positions in the conveying system. For most belt conveyors, the drive is located at the discharge or head of the belt. Other locations can be anywhere along the belt depending on the design. AC motors are generally used to power the pulley that moves the belt.
Belt
Belt conveyors use a system of motorized pulleys that have a belt made of thick durable material looped over the pulleys. When the motor is activated, the belt is pulled between the pulleys.
Support System
The support system allows the belt to move smoothly. It is specifically designed to hold the moving material without sagging. In the design phase, the weight capacity of the frame is determined and the frame is constructed to meet the needs of the operation.
Belt Cleaner
The purpose of a belt cleaner is to remove any carryback that may remain on the belt after the load is discharged from the belt. Carryback is common in all belt systems and is one of the major issues that causes belt malfunctions.
