Boliden announces expansion of 40 million euro nickel business in Finland

The Swedish mining company Boliden announced that it will expand its nickel business in Harjavalta, Finland, to 40 million euros.

After the nickel production line of the nickel smelter is expanded, the raw material feed capacity will be increased from 310,000 tons/year to 370,000 tons/year.

The expansion includes a new thickening dryer, increased capacity in the electric melting furnace and pelletizing, and automatic tapping of molten metal.

“We are now continuing the nickel strategy that we started in 2015. This investment strengthens our productivity and competitiveness, while further improving our already very strong environmental performance,” said Daniel Peltonen, president of the smelter in the Boliden business district.

The investment will be implemented mainly in 2021.

This expansion will reduce the carbon dioxide intensity per ton of nickel produced by Harjavalta by 15% to 20%.
