The global aluminum giant, Alcoa (US Aluminum), has officially announced the finalization of the project for the extraction facility of gallium at the Vogulup alumina plant in Australia. This project has received joint support from multiple governments and enterprises in the United States, Australia, and Japan. The core objective is to promote the diversification of critical mineral supply in the West and reduce the single reliance on the supply chain. The competition in the global supply chain of minor metals and industrial raw materials is continuously intensifying. Gallium, as a core strategic minor metal, is an essential raw material indispensable for the semiconductor and military industries. It also benefits significantly from the iteration of the AI industry and the popularization of new energy vehicles. The downstream market demand continues to rise steadily, and the global supply and demand situation has become increasingly tense. The Australian gallium extraction project implemented by Alcoa in this region is extracted through the by-product process of alumina smelting, featuring low cost and large-scale production capacity. After the project is completed and put into operation, its production capacity can cover approximately 10% of the global demand for gallium. It is reported that Alcoa has previously signed a special cooperation agreement with relevant Japanese institutions to lay the foundation for the implementation of the project technology and market connection.
