Bahlil Estimates That Indonesia's Processed Nickel Exports Will Be Worth $30 Billion By The End Of 2022

Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia's Minister of Investment/head of BKPM, estimates that exports of nickel products could reach $30 billion by the end of 2022.

Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM, delivered his opening address on investing in green businesses for Sustainable Growth at the B20 Summit held at the Nusa Dua Convention Centre (BNDCC) in Bali on Sunday (13 Nov 2022), conveying the conditions for investment in Indonesia and politics Government policy priority Indonesia.

Regarding downstream, Bahlil said the Indonesian government is focusing on developing the mining sector. One of them is nickel. Nickel exports were just $3.3bn in 2017-18. It will reach $20.9 billion in 2021.

"According to the trade data of the Ministry of Maritime and Investment Coordination, by the end of 2022, we will cover the nickel export trade of US $27 billion to US $30 billion," Bahlil said optimistically.

He admitted that he knew about downstream nickel and that many countries disagreed, including the European Union. One of the reasons the Indonesian government has banned nickel exports is that the mining process must be based on good conditions. The government does not want miners to fail to follow proper mining rules.

"We do it downstream by using new renewable energy (EBT), which we then export. But what happened, we were sued at the WTO, "he explained.

But Balil stresses that whatever happens, the Indonesian government will not flinch from the challenge of becoming a developed nation.

"This is only in the nickel phase, we are already moving to other mining phases, tin, bauxite and so on," Bahlil said, conveying Indonesia's policy of maximising the added value of mining commodities.
