Brazil Will Increase Its Share Of Key Mineral Production.

São Paulo, July 3 (Argus) - Brazil has outlined in its National Mining Plan (PNM 2050) released on Thursday that by 2050, Brazil's share of global key mineral production is expected to increase from the current 8.3% to 12.2%.
Minister of Mining Ana Paula Bittencourt said that the goal of PNM 2050 is to become "a strategic reference for guiding the development of Brazil's mining sector" and to ensure that the country's mineral resources continue to create value. It successfully completed the previous plan, PNM 2030, and will be updated every five years.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy plans to release a more detailed plan within 180 days.
The plan states that Brazil holds a prominent position on the global mining stage, being the world's largest producer of niobium, the second-largest producer of iron ore, and the third-largest producer of bauxite, as well as "an important" global reserve of rare earths and nickel. However, it adds that the country still faces a "huge gap" between reserves and domestic production. Therefore, the main goal of PNM 2050 is to increase production and "advance the industrialization and technological complexity of the mineral value chain".
PNM 2050 outlines that Brazil's share of global key mineral production will increase from the current 8.3% to 9% by 2030, then rise to 10.5% in 2040, and finally reach 12.2% in 2050.
The plan aims to incorporate mining into Brazil's national strategic plan, which aims to reduce Brazil's reliance on imported fertilizers. According to data from PNM 2050, currently 83.3% of the country's phosphate and potash fertilizers are imported, and the goal is to reduce this share to 53.8% by 2030, 37.3% by 2040, and 34.9% by 2050.
According to data from the mining research institute Ibram, investment in the Brazilian mining sector will reach $76.9 billion during the period 2026-2030, of which key minerals are expected to account for $21.3 billion, almost 28% of the total investment.
