Recently, the Department of Raw Material Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, PRC released the Operation Situation of Copper and Aluminum Industry from January to May 2021. According to the data of Shanghai Steel Union, by the end of May, China's copper and aluminum smelting capacity was 12.12 million tons and 39.45 million tons, with year-on-year growth of 21% and 9% respectively.
From January to May, the output of 44 copper smelting enterprises in China totaled 4.31 million tons, up 15% year-on-year, and the output of 88 electrolytic aluminum enterprises totaled 16.12 million tons, up 6% year-on-year.
According to the statistics of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, in May, the average spot price of copper and aluminum in China was 73,924 yuan/ton and 19,208 yuan/ton, up 8.3% and 7% month on month. By the end of May, China's copper and aluminum spot prices of 73,670 yuan/ton and 18,770 yuan/ton, 4.4% and 6.2% lower than the peak on May 10, respectively.
According to data from Shanghai Steel Union, by the end of May, China's copper and aluminum stocks were 329,000 tons and 971,000 tons, up 55.2% and 10.2% year on year, down 5.9% and 22.6% from the year's highs, fluctuating within the normal range.
In addition, according to the data of the General Administration of Customs, from January to April, China imported 7.883 million tons of copper concentrate (solid material), up 4.4% year on year; imports of unwrought copper and copper materials were 1.921 million tons, up 9.9% year on year; imports of unwrought aluminum and aluminum materials were 943,000 tons, up 131% year on year.
