Oriental Nison has signed a power purchase agreement with Nickel West, a unit of BHP Billiton, extending the 20MW renewable energy purchase agreement signed in February to 50MW to meet BHP's decarbonisation needs.
From August 1, an additional 30 MW will be used at western Nickel's Kalgoorlie smelter, reducing carbon emissions by 30 per cent. The previous 20 megawatts will be used at the Kwinana smelter and up to 50 per cent of the clean electricity will be provided by Oriental Risheng Australia's Merredin solar farm.
"This agreement will result in a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions from the Kalgoorlie smelter," said Jessica Farrell, President of Western Nickel. "Our battery and electric vehicle customers place a high value on sustainable, low-carbon nickel, and we aim to achieve a 30 percent reduction by 2030 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050."
"This partnership is an important step in our commitment to decarbonize Australia and a necessary foundation on which to build even more clean energy cooperation," said Eric Lee, executive director of Oriental Nison Australia. Several projects of Dongfang Nison are in preparation. "In order to achieve our long-term goal of becoming the leading developer of solar and battery storage solutions in Australia and helping Australia achieve the '2GW', We are constantly developing and improving our expertise to respond to market demands."
