Giga Metals announces that the work program for 2021 has begun, with resource drilling underway at the Turnagain Nickel-Cobalt Project in north-central British Columbia, and archaeological and wildlife surveys underway. The goal is to conduct a pre-feasibility study in the third quarter of 2022.
Highlights:
Extended resource classification of 6900 m resource drilling
Geotechnical engineering boreholes and hydrogeological installations of 2300 m for pit wall design
800m geotechnical drilling and hydrogeological installation for tailings storage facility design
9000 m seismic refraction survey for tailings storage facility design
25 excavator test pits designed for stacking and waste storage
In mid-June, Giga Metals announced that it was expanding the scope of the project, with the next phase of research including the production of cobalt nickel hydroxide (MHP). "MHP is the preferred intermediate product for the battery industry to manufacture metals, and we learned from our previous testing work that Turnagain can be processed into high quality MHP," said President Martin Vydra.
Current global wet nickel intermediate projects include Ramu, VNC-Goro, Ravensthorpe, Moa Bay, Murrin Murrin, Coral Bay, Ambatovy, Taganito, Hellenic Minerals and Gordes, Among the projects located in Indonesia are Likan OBI, Pomalaa, Weda Bay, Tsing Mei Barn, Huayue Nickel Co, Huayu Nickel Co, Pt. Gebe, PT Adhikara Cipta Mulia and PT Smelter Nikel Indonesia (expected to start production this year). Worldwide MHP nickel production capacity is approximately 125,000 tons per year and is expected to reach 400,000 tons per year by 2025. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for MHP is 33%, while the CAGR for nickel is 4% and that for cobalt is 8%.
