Glencore: Nickel Production Fell 19% Quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2023

On April 23, Glencore reported its own nickel production of 20,900 tonnes in the first quarter of 2023, down 19% sequentially and 32% (9,800 tonnes) year-on-year, mainly due to the prioritisation of third-party feedstock in the INO nickel project.

Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury, Raglan, Nikkelverk, INO) produced 8,100 tonnes of its own nickel, a decrease of 49% (7,800 tonnes) year-over-year and 16% sequentially. The Raglan strike in 2022 affected nickel production because of the long lead time required to move from ore mining in northern Quebec to finished nickel production in Norway.

Its own ferro nickel production was 7800 tons, an increase of 1% year-on-year and a decrease of 14% quarter-on-quarter; Total ferro nickel production, including third parties, was 8,900 tons, flat year-on-year and down 14% sequentially.

As a result of maintenance shutdowns in the first quarter of 2023, nickel alloy production of 5,000 tonnes was down 30% year-over-year, or 2,100 tonnes, and 29% sequentially.

Glencore has set nickel production for 2023 at 112,000 to 117,000 tonnes (excluding third party supplies), with 45% of target production planned for the first half of 2023.
