Arifin Tasrif, Indonesia's minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said Indonesia must have a vision for nickel resources if it wants to become a nickel producing organization. This is also in line with the proposal made by Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM, when forming the Nickel-producing Countries Organization.
In the Arifin report, the policies of the various nickel-producing countries really need to agree on the establishment of an international organization, especially in the case of equal access to nickel.
"I think countries with nickel natural resources really have to have a vision alliance, which is that how they deal with this material and their policies are equal and consistent," Arifin told reporters at the Bangdara Hotel in Indonesia on November 20, 2022.
While Arifin favors agreement on the group, he warns that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is creating a cartel that it can price to limit energy commodities.
"My only idea is not to become a cartel," Arifin stresses.
Recently, Minister Bahlil assessed that the Nickel Resource Nations Organization could coordinate this policy, and that Indonesia is currently using more natural resources to improve the automotive ecosystem.
"From what we have seen, industrial car manufacturers have been taking protective measures, so battery feedstock producers are not getting the best added value from the EV industry," said Minister Bahlil.
Through this collaboration, Bahlil hopes that all nickel producing countries will benefit by creating sufficient added value.
