The largest domestic carbon black company in the United States, Tokai Carbon American Carbon Black Company (TCCB, Tokai Carbon CB) announced today that the company has three plants in the United States, namely the Big Spring plant in Texas, The Addis plant in Louisiana and the Borger plant in Texas have completed a number of environmental protection facilities. This is part of the agreement on NOX and SO2 emissions signed by Richardson, the predecessor of the company, negotiated with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
TCCB said it has established a particulate emission detector and a complete set of operating procedures to monitor and reduce particulate emissions from the three factories. In addition, the Big Sperling plant has installed and has been put into continuous operation of NOX reduction equipment; in order to reduce NOx and SO2 emissions, these reduction equipment is being installed and commissioned, and it is planned to be put into operation in April 2021. The Addis plant will order NOx and SO2 control equipment before the end of 2020, and the installation is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
In addition, TCCB is investing USD 25 million to add tail gas power generation equipment to the Addis plant, which will reduce the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions. Although there is no provision in the agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the project will have a huge positive impact on the environment around the plant. After the completion of the Addis plant project, all three TCCB plants can use exhaust gas to generate electricity, and two of them can also export electricity to the local grid.
TCCB has invested more than US$50 million in environmental protection projects in these three US factories and plans to spend another US$73 million before the end of 2022 to meet the environmental protection targets stipulated in the agreement. Including the thermal energy project of the Addis plant, the company's total investment related to these projects will reach US$148 million by the end of 2022.
