South African producers of non-metallurgical chromite have formed a lobby group to pressure the government over a recently proposed export tax and the implementation of a different customs regime to exempt non-metallurgical chromite from tariffs.
Non-metallurgical grade chromite is not used to produce ferrochrome, therefore, supporters believe that the grade chromite should not be included in the scope of application of chromium ore tax, the tax is levied on the domestic ferrochrome value chain.
South African authorities announced the proposal in October to support the country's chromite industry.
However, the tax is still under discussion, there is no timetable for its implementation, and the impact on market conditions is still unclear.
According to current regulations, the country's customs does not make a distinction between metallurgical grade (chromite and chromite) and non-metallurgical grade (special chromite).
So once the tax is implemented, it will have an impact on the latter.
The representative of the lobby group expressed the hope that the special chromite would be exempted from this tax, because it is not part of the ferrochrome and stainless steel supply chain, and therefore has nothing to do with supporting the domestic ferrochrome industry, which is really not the same thing.
