The fate of the biggest mining deal in more than a decade rests in the hands of a Canadian tycoon who made his fortune in copper and coal. Norman Jr., who is 85, is now a young man. Norman Keevil Jr. is a director of Teck Resources Ltd. The controlling shareholder of the mining company he founded with his father nearly 60 years ago.

Today, the Vancouver-based company produces copper and zinc from several mines scattered across the Americas and makes steel coal from its lucrative Canadian operations. Those assets have made Teck a magnet for global mining companies looking for more industrial metals to underpin the global transition to clean energy, prompting Swiss commodities giant Glencore Plc to make an unsolicited $23 billion bid on March 26.
