According to the BNAmericas website, the chairman of the board of directors of the Chilean National copper Company (Codelco), Maximo Pacheco, recently warned that the copper market has changed significantly. This year the Democratic Republic of Congo overtook Peru as the world's second-largest copper producer. Pacheco pointed out that "the first is Chile, the second is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has surpassed Peru to become the world's second largest copper producer."
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Congo's copper production will reach 2.6 million tons this year, up 11% from 2022. By contrast, Peru's production increased by just 4 per cent, while Chile's rose by 2 per cent. Ruben Arietta, director of Wood Mackenzie, also pointed out at a seminar in Peru in the middle of this year that Congo's copper production last year was close to Peru's, which will produce 2.44 million tonnes in 2022.

This change not only highlights Congo's strong growth in copper production, but also reflects the dynamics of the global copper market. Production in Chile, the world's largest copper producer, is still growing, but at a smaller rate. Peru and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as major copper producers, their output growth is larger.
The rise of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been helped by its rich copper resources and increased mining investment in recent years. The substantial increase in its production reflects the remarkable results of the country's investment and development in the mining sector. This has also raised concerns about the balance between supply and demand in the global copper market.
For market participants, this change implies a need to pay more attention to the dynamics of the global copper market, including factors such as production from producing countries, demand from demand countries, and international trade policies. At the same time, environmental protection and sustainability issues need to be addressed, because the environmental impact of copper mining cannot be ignored.
