The Sulawesi Earthquake Has Not Affected Nickel Production

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's Sulawesi Island at 2:28 am Saturday, with a depth of 10 km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The quake was centered at 3.005 degrees south latitude and 118.924 degrees east longitude, with a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of 18.4 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's Seismological Information Network.

Indonesian media reported that Mamuju, the capital of West Sulawesi province, was just 34km from the epicentre and several buildings had collapsed.

Among them, part of the provincial government building collapsed, trapping two security personnel inside the rubble, while some hotels and hospitals were damaged to varying degrees.

It is reported that Sulawesi Island is a large island in the middle of Indonesia and the 11th largest island in the world. Its mineral resources are very rich. Indonesian nickel mineral resources gather in Sulawesi Island and the nearby islands.

Sulawesi nickel mineral resources account for about 80% of the total nickel mineral resources in Indonesia.

It is understood that there is no nickel-iron plant in West Sulawesi, where the earthquake is located. It is far from central and southeastern Sulawesi, where the main production zone is located, so there is no impact on nickel production.
