Uganda Plans To Revive The Copper Mining Industry, Re-exploring Copper, Nickel And Cobalt Ore--PUDA Packing Machine

According to the Uganda Monitor, after 35 years of silence, the government intends to revive the copper mining industry in the Kasese region.

Prior to the proposed revival of the Kilembe copper mining industry, the recent surge in electric vehicles worldwide has triggered new exploration of copper, nickel and cobalt in Uganda.

Dr. Jennifer Hinton, head of the country of Jervois Mining Limited, said: “Our company is even interested in the Kilembe area, because the global shift to electric vehicles has recently caused great demand for copper. Big."

Hinton also said: "But collecting soil samples is not a cheap risk. About 99.9% of the soil samples may have nothing after testing, which is why we have been trying."

October 27th. Ms. Sarah Opendi, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, said during a visit to Kasese that there is hope that mining will resume soon.

Ms. Opendi said: “We (the government) are satisfied with what Jereworth Mining Co., Ltd. has done locally. It followed all the guidelines given to them. We pray that the prospects for exploration will improve in order to mine, because Kasese has such a So many mineral resources."

Ms. Opendi also prayed that once the government starts bidding before the end of this year, Jereworth Mining Co., Ltd. will take over the contract to transform the Kilembe copper mine. The company has already shown its capabilities.

In the late 1970s, due to the civil war in Uganda and the drop in world market copper prices, the copper mining in Kilembe ceased. However, Kasese Cobalt Co Ltd is still operating.

Dr. Hinton revealed that 25,000 soil samples have been collected from Kitabu and Bwera counties and sent to laboratories in South Africa for testing, hoping that the test results are positive for copper.

Hinton said: “If possible, we are also interested in renovating the Kilembe copper mine. We used to employ more than 200 employees, but due to Covid-19, we reduced them to 20. They currently live in a hotel and have already Two months of training."

The Cabinet of Ministers convened a meeting in Entebbe State House on January 14, 2019, and resolved the issue of reforming the mining sector in Uganda.

The government will achieve this goal through the policy framework approved in the Principles of the 2019 Mining and Minerals Act.

These include: strengthening the legal and regulatory framework for licensing and development of the minerals sector; ensuring effective, fair, responsible and transparent management of mineral revenues; establishing, managing and promoting the country’s mineral potential; strengthening and effectively managing the institutional capacity of the minerals sector.

Other goals approved by the cabinet on the same day include: organizing and legislating artisanal and small-scale mining in Uganda to promote and protect the health, safety and environment of the mining industry, provide a framework for the sale and value-added of minerals, and promote local content and national participation in mining.
