7.Knowledge on Urea

Urea, also known as carbamide, has a chemical formula of CH4N2O. It is an organic compound composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. It is a white crystal. One of the simplest organic compounds is the main nitrogen-containing end product of protein metabolism and decomposition in mammals and certain fish. It is also the nitrogen fertilizer with the highest nitrogen content.

As a neutral fertilizer, urea is suitable for various soils and plants. It is easy to store, convenient to use, and has little damage to the soil. It is a chemical nitrogen fertilizer that is currently used in large quantities. In industry, ammonia and carbon dioxide are used to synthesize urea under certain conditions.

Chemical nature

It can react with acid to form salt. There is hydrolysis. Condensation reaction can be carried out at high temperature to generate biuret, triuret and cyanuric acid. It is decomposed when heated to 160°C, and ammonia gas is generated and it becomes isocyanic acid. Because this substance is contained in human urine, it is named urea. Urea contains 46% nitrogen (N), which is the highest nitrogen content among solid nitrogen fertilizers.

Urea can be hydrolyzed to produce ammonia and carbon dioxide under the action of acid, alkali and enzyme (acid and alkali need to be heated).

Unstable to heat, heating to 150~160℃ will deamination into biuret. The reaction of copper sulfate and biuret is purple, which can be used to identify urea. [1] If heated quickly, it will deamination and trimerize into six-membered ring compound cyanuric acid. (Mechanism: first deamination to generate isocyanic acid (HN=C=O), then trimerization.)

With acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride can generate acetyl urea and diacetyl urea.

Under the action of sodium ethoxide, it reacts with diethyl malonate to form malonyl urea (also known as barbituric acid because of its acidity).

Under the action of alkaline catalysts such as ammonia, it can react with formaldehyde and polycondensate into urea-formaldehyde resin.

It reacts with hydrazine hydrate to generate semicarbazide.

Urea is easily soluble in water, and 105 grams can be dissolved in 100 ml of water at 20°C. The aqueous solution shows a neutral reaction. There are two types of urea products. Crystalline urea is in the form of white needles or prismatic crystals. It has strong moisture absorption and agglomerates after moisture absorption. The moisture absorption speed is 12 times faster than granular urea. [1] Granular urea is a translucent particle with a particle diameter of 1 to 2 mm, with a smooth appearance and a significant improvement in moisture absorption. At 20℃, the critical moisture absorption point is 80% relative humidity, but at 30℃, the critical moisture absorption point drops to 72.5%. Therefore, urea should not be stored in the humid climate in midsummer. Adding hydrophobic substances such as paraffin wax to the production of urea greatly reduces its hygroscopicity.
