Jakarta, June 23, an Indonesian mining official said that if the new coronary pneumonia epidemic continues until the end of this year, then the country’s $3.7 billion smelter project investment is expected to be postponed until 2021.
According to Irwandy Arif, a consultant with the Ministry of Energy and Mining Resources of Indonesia, the above investment is mainly used to construct 35 ore processing facilities, which are under construction or will start construction this year.
Smelter projects include 18 nickel smelters, two copper projects, seven bauxite smelting projects, and other projects. He said that due to the epidemic, these projects are expected to be completed around 2023.
Arif added: "Since January this year, new smelter development operations have been suspended."
The Indonesian government believes that the end of the epidemic at the end of this month seems unlikely, as the number of newly diagnosed cases per day has not experienced a sustained and steady decline.
Arif said that before the outbreak, Indonesia plans to invest $20 billion in smelter projects by 2023.
Indonesia has stopped exporting nickel ore this year with the aim of developing the country’s domestic smelter.
