Anglo American on April 21st reported first-quarter nickel production of 13,900 tonnes at its two mines in South Africa and Brazil. Among them, the output of Brazil mining area was 93 thousand tons, down 8% year-on-year, down 12% from the previous month; Production from the South African mine was 40,600 tons, down 4% year on year and 19% month on month. Full-year nickel production target for 2022 remains unchanged at 40,000-42,000 tons.
Business in Brazil:
Nickel production at Barro Alto was 70,900 tonnes in the first quarter, down 4 per cent year on year and 8 per cent quarter on quarter.
Codemin's nickel mine production for the first quarter was 1, 400 tonnes, down 26 per cent year on year and 30 per cent quarter on quarter.
The reduction was mainly affected by late 2021 license delays, heavy rains and unplanned maintenance and lower ore grades at Codemin.
South Africa Business:
Refined nickel production at the Mogalakwena mine was 40,600 tonnes, down 4% year-on-year and 19% quarter-on-quarter. The reduction was mainly due to Eskom's load reduction and the related impact of COVID-19.
