If a giant open pit of copper mined for 100 years was told that the world's largest molybdenum deposit lay beneath it, it might be dismissed as a myth. But it's true. It happened at the Bingham copper mine in Utah.
The Bingham mine, located 45 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, is one of the most famous and largest copper mines in the United States, with a landscape as spectacular as the Grand Canyon. The mine, also an open-pit mine, is believed to be the largest cave ever dug on earth. Since mining in 1914, it has dug holes four kilometers in diameter and 1,200 meters deep, producing more than a third of America's copper production.
Beneath the Bingham mine lies what could be the world's largest molybdenum deposit, according to media reports. Rio Tinto plans to explore it. Previous work had focused on finding similar copper deposits on the surface, not molybdenum deposits beneath them. The mine is the first of two major molybdenum mines in the United States, Crimmax and Henderson, which are located in Colorado. Currently, as a by-product of bingham copper mine, molybdenum may become the main product of Bingham mine in the future, which will be called Bingham Molybdenum mine.
The discovery prompted Rio Tinto to adjust its prospecting targets and methods in the area, both at the surface and deep, looking not only for copper but also for molybdenum.
