Indian Billionaire Adani Has Launched A $1.2 Billion Indian Copper Smelter

Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has successfully launched the first unit of his $1.2 billion copper smelter, marking a major step in the business magnate's first foray into metals refining.

In a statement released on Thursday, Adani Enterprises LTD revealed that the smelter, commissioned by its flagship company to operate, is located in the western Indian state of Gujarat and has sent the first batch of cathode copper to customers. The commissioning of subsidiary Kutch Copper not only highlights Adani Group's diversification strategy, but also marks a new milestone in the Indian metal refining industry.

It is reported that the smelter will become one of the world's largest custom industrial metal smelters, with an initial annual capacity of 500,000 tons, and is expected to double its capacity in the second phase. This initiative will not only enhance the Adani Group's position in the global metals market, but also further promote the development of Indian industry.

In the context of Chinese copper producers facing a sharp drop in processing fees and squeezed profits, Adani Group's move has undoubtedly injected new vitality into India's copper industry. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed to modernizing the country's infrastructure, India's demand for key raw materials such as copper is expected to continue to grow.

"The launch of Kutch Copper not only expands Adani's footprint into the metals sector, but also helps India move towards a more sustainable and self-reliant future," Adani said in a statement.

Adani successfully fended off an attack on its conglomerate by short sellers last year. Although he denied Hindenburg Research's allegations, the group has temporarily slowed down some of its expansion plans. Following a series of equity raisings and debt refinancing operations, the Adani Group has regained the confidence of investors and bankers, and its market value has recovered from a low of $82 billion in February 2023 to the current $188 billion.
