On December 14, hundreds of employees of a factory in Indonesia staged a demonstration and set fire to dozens of vehicles and several buildings. The local government held an interview with the factory manager about the settlement of the incident.
According to Mysteel, the main reasons for the incident are as follows:
1. Salary and remuneration
According to local staff feedback, TKL (local Labour) salaries stated in PT VDNI's Non-specific Time working Agreement (PKWTT) are not in accordance with UMP as set by the ruler of UD 13 years, article 59, which results in the TKL wages at the plant being quite different from those of other local smelters.
Another is that TKA (foreign labor) wages and TKL wages have a large gap.
Compared with the TKL salary given by PT VDNI and OSS, the TKA salary is 4 times the TKL salary.
2. Epidemic prevention
By December 14, Indonesia had confirmed 5,489 new cases in a single day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 623,309.
According to local news reports, seven foreign workers at the factory were diagnosed with the new corona-virus in the early days, which led to questions from local labor organizations about the epidemic prevention measures. The government ordered the smelter to disinfect the working environment and report the progress of the epidemic.
It was only when Kerry Saiful Konggoasa, the head of Conaway, arrived at the scene late on Sunday that the chaos began to subside.
According to the latest news from the factory, the incident has largely subsided. Yesterday's demonstration resulted in the burning of some dump trucks, storage protective equipment and the residence of foreign workers. The first phase of nickel-iron production was affected, but now it has basically resumed normal operation.
As of December 14, 2020, all 15 ni-Fe production lines in the first phase of the plant have been put into operation, and 12 of the 32 ni-fe production lines in the second phase have been put into operation, while the 13th and 14th ni-Fe production lines have not been put into operation due to the slow progress of the epidemic situation.
