On 24 February 2021, Norilsk announced the partial closure of the Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines.
This follows the discovery of an inflow of natural groundwater at a depth of 350 metres in the Oktyabrsky mine cover during tunnel operations on 12 February.
Due to the increased amount of water flowing into the mine drainage system, and in accordance with safety procedures and applicable law, the Company has partially suspended operations at the mine until the flooding stops.
Flood is being removed.
The Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines are thought to account for about half of the ore Nornickel mines each year.
The Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky Mine Project is located in the Krasnoyarsk industrial area in Norilsk. The Oktyabrsky Mine Development Project aims to maintain and gradually increase its production to 6 MtPa by 2025 through the exploitation of 38.5 million tons of rich, dispersed and copper-bearing ore deposits in the Oktyabrskoye deposit.
The Taimyrsky mine development project aims to maintain ore production at 4.3 Mtpa to 2025 with ore reserves of 139 million tons by utilizing the rich copper-nickel reserves of the Oktyabrskoye deposit.
Sergey Dachenko, First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Nornickel, commented: "In order to ensure the safety of our employees, the precautionary measure of partial suspension of the Oktyabrsky mine must be taken.
Operations at the Taimyrsky mine have also been partially suspended because there are underground operations connected between the two mines and water has seep into the mine's view.
We are currently installing a cofferdam to stop any more water coming in.
With the cofferdam in place, we will be able to estimate the amount of water that has accumulated in the mine and strengthen our response efforts to drain the mine as quickly as possible.
We are doing our best to eliminate the flooding as soon as possible to minimize the impact of flooding on our production plans.
