On March 13, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino announced that Panama has approved the sale of copper concentrate from First Quantum Mining's Cobre Panama copper mine. The news sent First Quantum's shares up 15 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange to their highest level in two months. Mulino also ordered the restart of power plants needed at the port of Puntalincon, about 17 miles (27 kilometers) north of the mine, to support copper concentrate exports from the mine.
The Cobre Copper Mine is one of the largest copper mines in the world, with an annual output of 350,000 tons, accounting for 1.5% of global copper production. In 2023, the mine caused massive protests across the country due to environmental concerns, resulting in Panama's Supreme Court ruling that the copper contract signed by First Quantum and the then Panamanian government was unconstitutional, and then the previous Panamanian government ordered First Quantum to close the open pit copper mine in late 2023. The move raises questions about the maintenance of the massive mine and its 120,000 tonnes of stockpiled copper concentrate. 1, short-term impact: The restart of Cobre copper mine is expected to ease market concerns about copper supply shortage, may have a certain downward pressure on copper prices in the short term. Previously, due to the closure of the mine, the global copper concentrate market was tight, and processing fees (TC) and refining fees (RC) fell to historic lows. With the recovery of copper concentrate exports, the market supply tension is expected to ease, and copper prices may face the risk of correction. 2, long-term impact: Although the restart of Cobre copper mine will increase global copper supply, the global copper market still faces many uncertainties. For example, Chile and Peru, two major copper-producing countries in South America, are facing bottlenecks in increasing production. In addition, the growth of global copper demand and increased demand for copper from the new energy industry will remain supportive of copper prices. 3, market sentiment: The sharp rise in the share price of First Quantum Mining indicates the market's positive expectations for the restart of Cobre copper mine. However, a shift in market sentiment can also lead to a change in investor expectations for copper prices, which can affect the direction of copper prices. Although the restart of the Cobre mine will increase global copper supply, the global copper market still faces many challenges. For example, global copper concentrate supply growth has declined, and the surplus of copper concentrate has narrowed, supporting its price. In addition, with the acceleration of the global energy transition, the application of copper in new energy vehicles, photovoltaic and other fields will increase, which will further promote the growth of copper demand. In summary, the restart of Cobre copper mine will have a certain impact on copper prices, but the supply and demand pattern of the global copper market and the macroeconomic environment will still dominate the long-term trend of copper prices. Investors need to pay close attention to the global copper market dynamics in order to formulate a reasonable investment strategy.
